I am not filled with confidence when the narrator of a book is an animal, but this was written so cleverly that the human behind the keyboard was forgotten, except when I admired the audacity of revealing the imagined inner life and nightmares of a puppy mill dog. I have a survivor chihuahua who was a breeder in a mill for 7 years until he was rescued by the good people of best friends org and driven in truck for 19 hours to a New York suburb where 160 rescues were divided among many no-kill shelters. The trip from mill to pet shop in this book was very different, but the experience of the puppy narrator was extremely well researched and fleshed out with good intuition. The human family was depicted realistically, and without giving away the story, their behavior, as seen through the dog's eyes, was sadly right on target. The author knows his stuff, and clearly feels passionately about the way we treat animals in our society, but he limits soap box riffs to a minimum, letting the adventures of the narrating pup do the work of waking us up to our general inability to respect the feelings, needs, and rights of animals and the tragedy of our cultural assumption of dominion over all
things walking and crawling on earth. Human supremacy over animals is as old as the domestication of wolves and farm creatures, but the new twist is the callousness of breeding dogs in appalling conditions In order to sell them as if they were turnips-- just another crop but more lucrative than carrots. The small independent Chicken farmers who were crushed by mega corps around the 1990s were lobbied by puppy brokers to switch to breeding dogs and the result was the puppy mill industry, where chicken coops--usually unadapted to canine standards--were filled with whatever breed was most in vogue, sold to puppy brokers who doubled their money selling the "product" to pet shops, who tripled their investment. The heros of animal rights have done their best to try to outlaw mills, or at least enact minimal standards for care, but the department of agriculture who oversees dog breeding operations is toothless at best, and those few states that enacted laws to protect dogs has seen the worst operations go underground.
It's a painful thing to study this business, and this book makes the pain personal from the point of view of the dog without a whole lot of preaching or politicizing. But if this book doesn't politicize the issue for the reader, they might want to check the condition of their soul. There are many books out there about the abuse of dogs, but this is unique in its approach and the quality of writing. The best non-fiction book I've read about dog rescue is A Small Furry Prayer by Steven Kotler, if you want to get a huge overview of the age-old relationship between humans and dogs.
