The Road to Freedom Violet Kelemen 9780557091430 Books

I could not put this book down. It was like having a friend tell you their exciting adventures. My heart was pounding as Ibolya and Lazlo escaped the communist soldiers guarding the Hungarian border; I laughed as Violet described all of her adventures trying to get people in America to understand her; and I cried when she finally got back to see her family many years later. Most of all their story really reminds me that being born here in the US is such a blessing and we shouldn't take our many freedoms for granted.

Knowing the author, Violet Kelemen, makes this book even more valuable and enjoyable to read. Both Leslie and Violet are in my age group, therefore, I can relate to places like Camp Kilmer, NJ, mentioned in the book since my wife and I were married there some 56 years ago. This book shows what hard work and determination can do to anyone living in America, if one is willing to take advantage of the oportunities all of us have or have had. The events are a pleasure to read and should be an inspiration for teenagers, esp., along with adults, too. If nothing else, this book should elighten us to the values of freedom as we now have in America and be willing to give our all to this cause.
This is a heart-stopping account of a young couple's escape from Hungary during the revolution in the 1950's, a journey that soon led to America. The author's style of writing makes one feel as if she is right beside you telling her life story directly to you. Though it has sadness and loss, it also has triumph and hope, all spiced with a bit of humor and levity. I believe that even a young reader would find this fascinating because of the writing style. Kelemen goes on to describe her and her husband's lives in the US right up until their retirement. It's really an inspiring read. I think it would make a great gift to a younger person who has never known the threat of war,
I recently met Violet and knew a little bit about her story through a feature in our hometown newspaper. After reading her book, I feel as though I have known Violet and her husband, Leslie, for many years. I am so impressed by their courageous escape from the oppression that existed in Hungary in the 1950's. It is hard to imagine the difficulties of starting anew in a strange country - a young couple far from family, friends and everything familiar. This is a heart warming and uplifting story of Violet and Leslie making their way with hard work and determination, becoming citizens, making friends and bringing their extended families, one by one, to visit with them in the U.S.

I purchased this book for my Mother, at her request, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. She is passing it on to me, and I will read it this fall.
What an adventure! I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to leave your family and friends and come to a strange country. This book not only provides a history lesson on the 1956 Hungarian revolution; it shows the strength and character of a country and it's people. It was a reminder to me of how fortunate I am to live in a nation with so many freedoms. This book is an easy read and the photographs really make the story come to life!
I found this book very real and it was just like sitting across from Violet as she told the story to me. Both she and her husband came to life as the walked to freedom and then in the years of struggle and joy that they have in their life, if it be the sharing of their fruits of life with family or in loving a stray dog. Both are real people who care for their neighbor and friends as family. I could not put the book down and had to read it in one setting and have since passed it on to family to read.
Interesting story. Quick read. Describes the problems immigrants face when coming to this country. Good background for anyone who is considering bringing someone into the country or working with foreigners who have just arrived.
